The name comes from the greek Orchid Orchis which means testicle. Many species have in fact two in root tubers round vaguely remember that these male organs. Almost all the homegrown orchids do not like acid soil rich in organic matter while the tiny seed germination occurs only in the presence of a microscopic fungus.
The Orchidaceae of the genus Ophrys generally have a lip that resembles the body of a female insect; the resemblance is such as to deceive males who believe they have found a partner, attempting an impossible pairing with the result that they go away disappointed, but unwittingly loads of pollen plant auction.
